About The English Gardening School

The School was founded in 1983 by garden guru Rosemary Alexander and is based at the historic Chelsea Physic Garden.

We provide serious studies in gardening techniques, knowledge of plants, plus garden layout and design possibilities, overseen by major personalities in this growing industry. Termly links with the National Trust’s Sissinghurst Castle garden and practical work, guided by experienced gardeners at Rosemary Alexander’s well known garden in Hampshire, ensure that the course is both practical and theoretical.

The care and attention the tutors give is outstanding, feedback both on design and written work is detailed and critical while remaining positive. I thoroughly enjoyed the course as much for meeting the other high calibre students as for the content and left inspired and confident that I had achieved a solid grounding in the subject.

Student - Garden Design Diploma 2018

Many students come from abroad, where the School is recognised as the leading international establishment of its type.

Students value our help and encouragement in developing their personal skills as gardeners, designers, writers, planting consultants or media presenters. EGS alumni tend to keep in touch with us and we proudly support them long after they graduate.  Our impressive list of graduates, now in many different associated careers, including designing gardens for many of the RHS shows, demonstrates our continued success in guiding students through the options of this demanding and diverse profession.
