Join us for an inspiring day exploring two of Oxfordshire’s most captivating private gardens — Rousham Gardens and Ham Court, Bampton.
Step into the world of English garden design at Rousham, the masterpiece of 18th-century landscape architect William Kent. One of England’s most important gardens, Rousham represents the first phase of English landscape design and remains almost as its designer William Kent left it. Many of the features that delighted its 18th century visitors are still there for 21st century visitors to enjoy; sweeping views, classical temples, ornamental pools. We will spend the morning at this extraordinary garden and will be shown around by a Heritage Garden Guide.
We will then visit Ham Court which showcases a strikingly different vision. Lovingly restored and creatively reimagined by its current owner; artist, author and illustrator Matthew Rice, who bought the property in 2011. Several acres of garden, orchard and paddock surround the last gatehouse fragment of the medieval Bampton Castle, partially moated with walled kitchen garden, a productive greenhouse and farmyard with a variety of farm animals. 12,000 trees have made a backdrop and provided a habitat for birds that were notably lacking from the tired ex dairy farm it once was.
This exclusive tour offers a rare opportunity to experience both gardens in one day. We will begin the day at Rousham and then travel to Ham Court where a delicious seasonal lunch awaits, along with a tour of the kitchen gardens and grounds. Our day will end with tea & cake with Matthew Rice in his beautiful art studio.
