Border Design course - page 1
This course is aimed at amateur gardeners who wish to update their garden or plant enthusiasts who may be considering a career in planting design. You will begin by learning the professional way to draw up a border before going in depth into designing with plants to create a well balanced border.

The branching canopy of Amelanchier lamarckii allows light to filter through to the planting below 118

The course focuses on perennials, trees, shrubs and climbers and you will learn many of Rosemary’s favorites along with plant combinations, reasons behind her design decisions and recommended nurseries. Lead by Rosemary Alexander and Catriona Rowbotham with guest lecturers Andy McIndoe & Richard Miers. This is a 6 day course held at the Chelsea Physic Garden with 1 day visiting 2 private gardens in West Sussex & a local nursery. Students will work off provided drawing boards and there will be a presentation every day plus handouts to take home.

Week one . You will learn the basics for drawing up a border by hand using your measuring tape and scale rule. By the end of the first week you will know how to draw up an existing border to scale and have an understanding of how to add structure into a design with trees, shrubs and climbers. There will also be a lecture from leading horticulturalist Andy McIndoe.

Week two . During week two we will discuss perennials, colour combinations, best performing plants and how to extend the growing season. On day four we will also be joined by renowned garden designer Richard Miers who will give a lecture on his 2022 award winning Chelsea garden plus feedback on your designs.

Week three . We will review your designs and discuss adding seasonal planting including annuals and bulbs in the ground or in pots. On the final day we will visit Rogate (near Petersfield) GU31 5HU where we visit a plant nursery, Sandhill Farm House (private house and garden of Rosemary Alexander) and another garden close by.

We will provide templates for borders to design into as well as encouraging students to measure up their own borders at home so that they can work from these in week two and three.

A light lunch will be provided each day.
